Writers’ land
Other writers, such as Macías O Namorado and Juan Rodríguez de la Cámara or Juan Rodríguez del Padrón, wrote their verses here in the Middle Ages. The poet Rosalía de Castro lived in Casa da Matanza, where her house-museum is located, and other less known writers such as Manuel Barros and Nicasio Pajares were born and lived in Padrón as well.
Place of St. James tradition
According to tradition, the apostle St. James the Great preached here, at Santiaguiño do Monte, and after his death, his disciples brought him back to this land on a stone boat. This boat was tied to another stone called the "Pedrón". According to St. James’ legend, the "Pedrón" is currently preserved at the local church Santiago de Padrón.
Other places of interest
Other places of great cultural interest and deep historical roots can be found in Padrón: El Espolón (a promenade skirting the bend of the river Sar and where the monuments dedicated to Rosalía de Castro and Camilo José Cela are located), the bridge of Santiago, and the Convento do Carmen ("Convent of Carmen"). On the other side of the riverbank, there is the Fonte do Carme ("Fountain of Carmen") and the Way of the cross path that goes up to the hermitage of Santiaguiño do Monte.
Padrón is also rich in stately houses such as that of the Pazo do Bispo de Quito and the Pazo Arretén, and plazas such as Plaza de Macías.
As examples of religious architecture, the Franciscan monastery of San Antonio de Herbón (dating back to 14th century), the sanctuary Nosa Señora da Escravitude and the already mentioned church of Santiago are places worth visiting.
Gastronomy
The famous green peppers (brought from America by the Franciscan monks of Herbón in the 17th century) and the lamprey stand out especially among local gastronomy products.
The Sunday Market of Padrón is worth visiting to see the gastronomic wealth of the region.
